Easy 2 step process:

How Orasure Works:

  • The special pad is
    placed between the
    lower gum and inner
    cheek and left there
    for two minutes.
  • The OraSure system
draws HIV antibodies out of the tissues of the cheek and gum. The virus itself is rarely ever found in oral fluid.
  • This sample, called
    mucosal transudate,
    contains far fewer
    contaminants than
    typically found in
    saliva.

What is the difference between saliva
and mucosal transudate?

Oral mucosal transudate has high concentrations of IgG; saliva
has practically none. Oral mucosal transudate comes from the
tissues of the cheek and gum; saliva comes from the salivary
glands.

In a large, multi-center clinical trial:
Matched OraSure and blood specimens were collected.
Study involved 3,570 subjects at eleven sites around the United States.
Subjects ranged in age from 13 to 80.
More than 38% of study participants were women.

Clinical trial results showed:

Overall, testing of OraSure samples gave the correct result or triggered appropriate follow-up testing in 99.97%.

  Q&A

What is OraSure and How Does OraSure Work?

The OraSure oral specimen collection device is an FDA approved non-invasive HIV-1 antibody test. This test extracts antibodies from the blood vessels in the mucous membranes in the mouth and  IS NOT a saliva test.

Like a blood test, OraSure looks for antibodies to HIV-1, not the virus itself. The OraSure ELISA test was FDA approved in December of 1994,
and the Western Blot confirmatory test was approved in June of 1996. Both the OraSure ELISA and Western Blot tests are approved for physician,
medical center of public health use; it is not licensed for at-home use.

Is this test as good as the blood tests that have been in use for years?

A correctly performed OraSure Oral Fluid HIV-1 Antibody Test is an accurate alternative to blood testing for HIV-1 infection in public health and
clinical settings.

How can the OraSure test blood for HIV in the mouth if HIV cant be transmitted through saliva and kissing?

OraSure looks for antibodies for HIV, not the virus itself. A blood test works the same way. OraSure does not use saliva, but rather absorbs antibodies directly from the blood vessels in the mucous membranes.  The OraSure test is not a saliva test. OraSure draws out HIV antibodies, if they are present from the tissues of the cheek and gum. The mucous membranes have a much higher amount of antibodies than does saliva.

Do any medications or mouth conditions affect the test?

No. Oral conditions, disease, medications, and non-HIV related medical conditions will not affect the accuracy of the OraSure test.

Are there any toxic chemicals in the collection device?

No. The collection device is not considered to be or contain hazardous chemicals based on evaluations made by OraSure Technologies, Inc under OSHA Hazard Communications Standard, 29 CFC 1910.1200. The specific ingredients are:
